Crowd Sourcing Garden Design

Hi Everybody,

Are you ready this is going to be fun. Last summer Maren and I moved into our house in S. Minneapolis. The yard is pretty much a blank slate. There are a few mid size shrubs some random hostas and a mature birch in the front yard. But other than that the yard is mostly weak grass.

After living in a condo for three years I was definitely ready to start getting my hands dirty again. I contacted a garden designer to get an estimate and although her price seemed reasonable for the amount of work she was going to do I decided i would rather spend that money on plants and do the design myself.

But then I realized the vast amount of research that I would likely have to do to get everything right. Then I had this idea. Why not get the "Crowd" to help out. So I am setting up this blog where I will set up the desired result and you can add your two cents with out any expectation of having to do anything or any responsibility for how well or poorly things turn out.

My first project is to get the yard into some sort of drawing. I have access to illustrator, word and I have been thinking about learning sketch-up. Then there is always the traditional paper and pencil. Are there any garden design programs that you love? Any experience with sketch-up how hard is it to learn? How did you do your layout. Let's talk about it.

Keep your digits in the dirt,

Mike
